Meet our Young Investigators: Venla Kyttä, Luke

Venla Kyttä works as a PostDoc in the GIATN LEAPS project, where she is involved in the sustainability assessment of alternative proteins. Her focus is on environmental impact assessments and the effects of alternative proteins on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
What is the main focus of your research?
My research is dedicated to advancing environmentally and nutritionally sustainable food systems. More specifically, I work with life cycle assessment (LCA) of individual food products, meals, and diets. Recently, my passion has found focus on the development of nutritional LCAs, aiming to contribute to a healthier planet and society.
Where are you based? What do you enjoy about your university? Does it foster your interest in alternative proteins? Is there a local community that inspires your work?
I work at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) in the Helsinki office. Luke is a large institute with a diverse range of expertise. The best part of my job is my talented colleagues, whose enthusiasm and extensive knowledge turn every conversation into a learning opportunity
What sparked your personal interest in the topic of dietary shifts?
My background is in agricultural sciences, specifically agroecology, and I believe that dietary shifts are crucial for transforming the entire food system to become more sustainable in all its dimensions.
What are your aspirations for the future, and how do you hope your work will make an impact?
Lately, I have been interested in dynamic food system models and the One Health concept. I hope that in the future, I can conduct more holistic research that provides robust information to guide our food system towards sustainable pathways.
